Be Who You Meant To Be

Do you ever feel like your life isn’t good enough for you?
Do you ever feel like your job doesn’t let you be yourself?
Have you ever felt like you were born to do something else?

Well, you’re not alone! I have met many people who don’t like what they do and don’t do what they like…in fact, I was one of them. Although I have always wanted to play guitar, my parents pushed me to go to university for studies in Economics. I didn’t want to let them down, so I left my dream behind and I found a well-paid job… that I hated. After meeting and talking to many people with the same “career” problem, I started wondering…

Why do we force ourselves to do jobs we don’t like?

I have concluded that these are some of the excuses we make up to keep ourselves away from our dreams:

1. What is “expected” of us
It’s true that other people expect us to follow a certain path in our lives, including our jobs. Our parents want us to get jobs that pay well and keep society rates high, or they want us to continue the family business for which they worked hard.

If you don’t want any of these, just say NO. It may be hard and you may also “let them down”, but that’s the only truth in your heart and that’s what matters. Don’t listen to what other people say, because the more you try to satisfy them, the further from your dream you will stray.

2. “The money isn’t enough”

Usually, we think that our dream jobs won’t pay well. In a consumer society, this is not good. Having no money equals disaster. With little or no money, how will you buy a house? How will you buy a car? How will you dress like Madonna?
Well, who cares???
Even if you’re afraid your friends and/or your significant other will run away when you have no money…think again: do you really want these people in your life?
Besides, this “no-money” period will be short. If you want to be an actor, a photographer or a juggler, you will eventually succeed; so, you will be able to earn money and live normally.

3. “Fear!”
“How do I know that I will succeed?” This is the most common question among people who do not dare to follow their dream. You can also hear them ask themselves: “What if I am not good enough?” or “There are luckier people out there”, “I’ll probably never get the chance” or “The whole world is against me”…
Just do not believe in Murphy’s Law! Believe in yourself.

First, you have to find what you are good at. Then, just believe in yourself! Be sure about it. Nobody can tell you that you won’t succeed. You have to take for granted that you will succeed!
When you are sure about what it is that you want, and have decided to do it, there is only one thing left to do: try, try and try until you drop! Do not give up! I have talked to people who have managed to make their passion employment, and they said that talent is not enough. You have to try, and keep trying. Then, you will surely succeed!

I believe this myself. I mean, we only have one life, and no one deserves to live in unhappiness and depression. But that’s what happens when you force yourself to do something you don’t like. You will eventually hate it! You’ll feel angry for no reason. You will always feel tired and you will rely on anybody but yourself.

I took that advice for myself. A few months ago, I quit my job. Now I teach music! My life has changed. The money isn’t much, and I live in a little house in the center of the city, but I am happier than ever! I walk down the street, and I feel like I’m going to fly. But I think this is just the beginning. The best days haven’t come yet!

Do the same for yourselves. Start today. Quit the job you don’t like, find what you have always wanted to be - well, I am sure you already know what that is - and just do it! Be who you are meant to be!
